Instead, Giovanni implores the audience to take focus on the things that truly matter in life. Ultimately, the poem is urging society to stop drawing these differences, whether they be class or race based. For example, she highlights the fact that if anyone black were to “become famous”, they would immediately focus on the struggles endured through childhood, rather than draw attention to “how happy you were.” She starkly contrasts this with the fact that “no white person ever has cause / to write about. At the same time, she criticizes the stereotypes attached to black people with regard to their poverty. Giovanni describes her own experiences of growing up in the predominantly Black area of Cincinnati and the sense of community and belonging that brought. The poem is a message to the world about the strength of the African American community, in the face of racial adversity.
